About Bert Powell
Bert Powell, MA, began his clinical career as a family therapist seeing outpatients at a community mental health center. There he helped many kinds of families find strengths they had not recognized and use them on their problems. The Masterson Institute in New York City certified him in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Powell holds an adjunct assistant professor post at Gonzaga University, in the Graduate School of Counseling Psychology. He also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Attachment and Human Development as an international advisor. Since 1985 he has shared a clinical practice in Spokane with Kent Hoffman and Glen Cooper. The three worked together to create the Circle of Security, drawing on attachment theory, object relations and family systems theory. Each has received the Bowlby–Ainsworth Award and the Washington Governor's Award for Innovation in Prevention. The three also wrote Raising a Secure Child, for parents, and The Circle of Security Intervention, for mental health professionals.
