Pick Shortform if you want to study one book properly, with commentary, exercises and notes. Pick Blinkist if you want the key ideas of many books, about 15 minutes each, for less money. If you mostly listen and pay in Thai baht, BookBits, the app we make, is a third option at THB 99 a month or THB 990 a year for two accounts.
Prices, trials and features for both services were checked on October 6, 2026, on their own websites, help pages and App Store listings.

How deep each one goes
Shortform sells something closer to a study guide than a summary. In its own words, a guide examines how other experts approach the same topic and adds “unique commentary”. Guides come with interactive exercises that “test your understanding”, community discussions, highlights and notes, PDF downloads and audio narration of every guide (Shortform homepage). You can use it on desktop, in the iOS and Android apps and on Kindle, and read or listen offline in the mobile apps (pricing page).
Blinkist is narrower by design: the key ideas of a book or podcast episode, which you read or hear in about 15 minutes. Audio downloads for offline listening come with a paid plan, in the mobile apps (help center).
Shortform’s pages do not say how long a guide takes. One reviewer who subscribes to Shortform, writing on Little Almanack (a page that carries a Shortform affiliate link), timed the audio of its one-page summaries at typically 25 to 50 minutes. Treat that as one person’s measurement, not a Shortform figure.
How much time each asks of you
Think about time before price. A 15-minute summary fits into a commute or a lunch break. A longer guide that asks you to answer questions is closer to a study session: worth more if you finish it, worth less if it sits half done in your library.
Length also depends on the book. Even in a format built around 15 minutes, a dense book takes longer: our summary of Antifragile, the book Little Almanack used for its test, runs 24 min 22 sec. Heavy, research-based titles such as Thinking, Fast and Slow are where the trade between depth and speed matters most.
A practical test: count the reading or listening time you really have in a normal week, then pick the format that fits it, not the one that looks best on a feature list.
What they cost in the US and in Thailand
| Plan | Shortform | Blinkist Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly, Thai App Store | THB 899 | THB 319 or THB 419 (items labeled one month) |
| Yearly in Thailand | THB 6,990 (App Store, Annual) | THB 2,319.99 first year, THB 2,899.99 list (website) |
| Monthly, US App Store | USD 23.99 | USD 12.99 or USD 15.99 (items labeled one month) |
| Yearly, US App Store | USD 194.99 | USD 79.99, 99.99 or 119.99 (items labeled one year) |
| Yearly, US website | USD 197 billed annually, shown as USD 16.42 a month | USD 79.99 first year, USD 99.99 list |
| Monthly, US website | USD 24.00 | Not sold on the website |
Visitors from Thailand see Shortform’s website in US dollars, at the same prices as US visitors. When we read it, the site also showed a “25% off” banner for viewers of a partner, and it did not say whether the prices shown already included that discount. That is why this page leads with the App Store prices, which carry no banner.
On every price that is labeled with a billing period, Blinkist costs less than Shortform. Blinkist’s own website sells only yearly plans, and the first-year price rises to the list price at renewal; our Blinkist review has the full breakdown, including Pro.
Free trials and free plans
Shortform’s homepage says “Both plans start with a free trial”, and its own page on free trials gives the length as five days, on the monthly or the annual plan. Signing up also gets you free samples of its guides.
Blinkist works the other way round. Instead of a trial on every plan, it keeps a free Basic tier that unlocks one title a day, picked by Blinkist rather than by you. A 7-day trial of the yearly plan comes only “in some cases”, according to its help center, and only once per person.
Library and languages
Shortform says it covers 12,000+ books, plus 1,000+ article and topic guides. Blinkist says it has 9,000+ book and podcast summaries. Each company counts in its own way, and neither figure tells you whether the book you want is there. Before you pay for any summary service, search for the three or four titles you care about most. On BookBits you can do that without an account, because every book page is open to visitors.
Both services list four languages. Shortform offers English, Spanish, German and Brazilian Portuguese; Blinkist offers English, German, Spanish and Portuguese. Neither offers Thai.
Is Shortform worth it?
Shortform is worth its price if you:
- are a student or professional who has to know one book well;
- will actually do the exercises and write notes;
- want PDF downloads of what you study.
It is a weaker fit if you:
- want a 15-minute listen on the way to work;
- budget in baht (THB 899 a month on the Thai App Store);
- hope to share one plan between two people: we found no second-account or family plan on Shortform’s pages.
Shortform app review: what to check before you pay
The Shortform app runs on iOS and Android, next to the desktop site and a Kindle option, and you can read and listen offline in the mobile apps. Before you subscribe, check four things:
- Which price you are looking at. The App Store prices are clearly labeled by plan. The website prices sit next to a partner discount banner, and the page does not say whether they include it.
- The trial clock. Shortform’s trial lasts five days on either plan, so pick the books you want to test before you start it.
- Exercises and notes. They are the main reason to pay Shortform’s price. If you know you will skip them, a shorter format may serve you as well for less.
- Sharing. We found no second-account or family plan on Shortform’s pages. If two of you want it, ask Shortform before you buy.
Which one helps you remember more?
Shortform’s exercises ask you to answer questions about what you have just read, which is a different activity from reading or listening alone. Blinkist and BookBits give you the ideas and leave the follow-up to you. Neither kind of app is a memory system on its own. For techniques that work with any book or summary, see How to Remember What You Read.
A third option for listeners in Southeast Asia
BookBits, our own app, makes audio summaries of nonfiction books, about 15 minutes each, in English and Thai. Our summaries are written in our own words with an AI-augmented process and narrated by AI voices.
One subscription costs THB 99 a month or THB 990 a year and covers two accounts, each with its own library, after a 7-day free trial on either plan (card required). In Thailand, THB 990 a year compares with THB 6,990 for Shortform’s annual App Store plan and THB 2,319.99 for Blinkist Premium’s first year on the website; THB 99 a month compares with THB 899 for Shortform and THB 319 or THB 419 for Blinkist. We price only in baht, so we make no claim for readers paying in US dollars.
BookBits is built for listening to the key ideas, not as a study guide. Members hear the full summary in the iOS or Android app; on the website, book pages show the written introduction and conclusion and a one-line guide to each chapter. If depth on a single book is the goal, Shortform is the better tool.
What BookBits adds is a way to choose. Goals such as Think More Clearly and Improve Decision-Making gather books like Antifragile and Thinking, Fast and Slow, and ordered reading paths such as The Fast Learner’s Foundation and Ideas That Broke the World Open tell you what to hear next.
Quick answers
Is Shortform worth the money?
Yes, if you want to study specific books and will use the exercises and notes. If you only want short listens, it is more than you need, and in baht it is the most expensive of the three options here.
How much does Shortform cost?
On the App Store, USD 23.99 a month or USD 194.99 a year in the US, and THB 899 a month or THB 6,990 a year in Thailand. Its website shows USD 24.00 a month or USD 197 a year, next to a partner discount banner.
Which app is better than Blinkist?
That depends on what you need. Shortform goes deeper on one book. Headway adds habit tools such as streaks and quizzes (Headway vs Blinkist). BookBits costs less than Blinkist in Thailand and offers Thai.
Is Blinkist actually worth it?
For readers who want text and audio in English, German, Spanish or Portuguese, often yes. Our Blinkist review works through prices and situations.
What is the best book summary app for free?
Most apps offer a free sample, a daily title or a trial rather than a free library. Our guide to free book summaries covers the free options, and Best Book Summary Apps Compared lists every app’s free option side by side.
Hear a preview first
BookBits book pages carry short audio previews that you can play free, without an account. Members hear the full summary in the app. BookBits Unlimited is THB 99 a month or THB 990 a year for two accounts, after a 7-day free trial; full listening requires the iOS or Android app. Plans and trial details are on our Pricing page.
