About Carl von Clausewitz
Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz was born on 1 July 1780 in Burg bei Magdeburg, Prussia, and died on 16 November 1831. He served in the Rhine campaign of 1793 to 1794 and in the Napoleonic Wars between 1806 and 1815, including the battles of Jena and Borodino. He also helped negotiate the Convention of Tauroggen. He spent more than ten years writing On War, which was still unfinished when he died. His wife published it the following year. Clausewitz stressed the psychological and political sides of war, and he rejected the idea that war could be measured or boiled down to maps and geometry.
