About Jack Welch

Jack Welch (1935 to 2020) trained as a chemical engineer and joined General Electric (GE) in 1960. He studied at the University of Massachusetts, then earned a master's degree and a doctorate in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois. In 1981 he became the eighth chairman and CEO of GE, a post he held until 2001. Fortune magazine named him "Manager of the Century" in 2000. His legacy has also drawn scrutiny from historians and journalists, particularly over GE's growing reliance on financial services. Welch wrote the autobiography Jack: Straight from the Gut in 2001. His book Winning was a number one Wall Street Journal and international bestseller. He later launched the Jack Welch Management Institute at Strayer University, which offers an online MBA and certificate programs.
