About Jeffrey M. Schwartz
Jeffrey M. Schwartz is a research psychiatrist at the UCLA School of Medicine. He has authored more than 100 scientific publications in neuroscience and psychiatry, as well as several books for general readers. These include You Are Not Your Brain, co-written with Rebecca Gladding (2011), along with Brain Lock (1997) and The Mind and the Brain (2002). After earning an honors degree in philosophy at the University of Rochester, he turned to Buddhist philosophy and the practice of mindfulness. In the 1990s at UCLA, he found that a four-step cognitive behavioral therapy he pioneered could change activity in a specific brain circuit in people with OCD, as shown by positron emission tomography (PET) scans. He has also applied his mind-over-brain approach to business leadership and organizational behavior. For the film The Aviator, he advised both Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.
