About Rebecca Gladding
Rebecca Gladding, M.D., is a psychiatrist and clinical instructor at UCLA's Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. She graduated from medical school at UCSF, did her psychiatry residency at UCLA, and spent six months as a Psychosomatic Fellow at the University of Washington. She has received several teaching awards and appeared in the A&E series Obsessed. Her clinical work has centered on anxiety and how often people misunderstand it. She sees anxiety as a useful signal that a deeper emotion is trying to surface, and she teaches people to spot misleading negative thoughts, which she calls deceptive brain messages, so they can express what they truly feel. Since 1999 Gladding has worked with Dr. Schwartz, and she shares his view that the mind can change the brain. She teaches the Four Steps method and how to apply it to daily life and relationships. Her book in our catalog is You Are Not Your Brain.
