About Steven Levitsky

Steven Levitsky was born in 1968 and is a professor of government at Harvard University. He also holds a senior fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations, focused on democracy, and is a senior fellow at the Kettering Foundation. As a comparative political scientist, he focuses mainly on Latin America. His work looks at how parties and party systems function, how authoritarian rule and democratization unfold, and how weak or informal institutions operate. He has also written Competitive Authoritarianism and has received numerous teaching awards. With Daniel Ziblatt he co-authored How Democracies Die, a 2018 best seller. The book argues that Donald Trump and the Republican Party acted in ways that echo democratic breakdowns elsewhere and in the past. Levitsky has also written for Vox and The New York Times.
