About Alice B. Toklas

Alice Babette Toklas (1877 to 1967) was born in San Francisco and went to school in San Francisco and Seattle. She later settled in Paris, where she became part of the city's avant-garde in the early 20th century. She lived with Gertrude Stein for nearly 40 years. Together they hosted a salon that drew expatriate writers and painters, including Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Toklas acted as confidante, secretary, editor and organizer in that circle. Her writing includes cookbooks and a volume of memoirs. BookBits carries The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book.
