About Anders Ericsson

Ericsson was born in Sweden in 1947 and died in 2020. He held a professorship in psychology at Florida State University, where he was a Conradi Eminent Scholar, and he was recognized worldwide for his research on expertise and human performance. He studied top performers in fields such as medicine, music, chess and sports. His work centered on extended deliberate practice, meaning focused practice beyond one's comfort zone, as the way experts reach their level. He also edited two books: the Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance (2006) and The Development of Professional Expertise (2009). Malcolm Gladwell built his "10,000 hour rule" in Outliers on a 1993 paper by Ericsson and colleagues about expert violinists. Ericsson later said that the rule was flawed in several ways.
