About Barry Goldwater
Barry Morris Goldwater (1909 to 1998) was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He took part in managing his family's department store. In World War II he piloted flights linking the US and India, and he later held the rank of major general in the Air Force Reserve. Goldwater won election to the US Senate in 1952. He served from 1953 to 1965 and again from 1969 to 1987. In 1964 he secured the Republican nomination for president but lost the general election to Lyndon B. Johnson. Many historians and political commentators say he prepared the ground for the conservative revolution that came after him. His book in our catalog is The Conscience of a Conservative.
