Bryan Caplan is an American economist who teaches economics at George Mason University. He studied economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and earned his doctorate at Princeton University. He also holds a senior research fellowship at the Mercatus Center and is an adjunct scholar with the Cato Institute. Most of his scholarly research falls within public economics and behavioral economics, with a particular focus on public choice theory. His book The Myth of the Rational Voter, published by Princeton University Press in 2007, challenges the idea that voters behave rationally, drawing on his model of "rational irrationality."
