About Cacilda Jethá
Cacilda Jethá was born in Mozambique to a family that had come from Goa, India, two generations earlier. As a child she fled civil war and went to Portugal, where she did most of her schooling and medical training. In the late 1980s she went back to Mozambique and spent seven years as the only doctor for about 50,000 people in a large rural district in the north. During that time she carried out research on the sexual behavior of rural Mozambicans, funded by the World Health Organization, to help shape AIDS prevention work. She later returned to Portugal and completed her medical residency in psychiatry and occupational medicine. With Christopher Ryan she wrote Sex at Dawn, which was a New York Times best-seller. She speaks Portuguese, French, Spanish, Catalan and English, along with some Swahili.
