About Dan Hurley

Dan Hurley studied at Beloit College in Wisconsin and began his career by helping to create and edit the Clayton Times, near St. Louis. He went on to work as a freelance science journalist for more than 25 years. In 1983 he set up a typewriter on Michigan Avenue in Chicago and began writing 60-Second Novels for passers-by, each inspired by a short conversation. He later made it his full-time work in New York, and kept it up for about 30 years. Smarter grew out of his reporting on studies suggesting that intelligence can be increased. For the book, he tried a combination of the methods himself, including learning to play the Renaissance lute.
