About David J. Chalmers

Chalmers holds a professorship in philosophy and neural science at New York University (NYU). He co-directs the university's Center for Mind, Brain and Consciousness, and his specialities are philosophy of mind and philosophy of language. He wrote The Conscious Mind, and has also written The Character of Consciousness and Constructing the World. He popularised the philosophical zombie thought experiment, and his hard problem of consciousness inspired Tom Stoppard's play The Hard Problem. He is also known for the extended mind idea, which holds that everyday tools can become part of a mind. Chalmers has given the John Locke Lectures and received the Jean Nicod Prize. The Australian Academy of the Humanities elected him a fellow in 2006, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences did so in 2013. With David Bourget, he co-founded PhilPapers, an online database of journal articles for philosophers.
