About David Kelley

David Kelley is an American engineer, designer, businessman and educator. He co-founded the design firm that became IDEO in 1978 and has been its chair. He is also a professor at Stanford University, where he has taught for more than 25 years. He was working as an electrical engineer when he learned of Stanford's Joint Program in Design, which merged engineering and art. The human-centered, team-based approach he learned there shaped his work as a design thinker. He also led the creation of Stanford's d.school, the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. His honors include the Sir Misha Black Medal for design education and the Edison Achievement Award for Innovation. The National Academy of Engineers counts him among its members.
