About George Pólya

George Pólya (1887 to 1985) taught mathematics at ETH Zürich from 1914 to 1940 and at Stanford University from 1940 to 1953. His work ranged from probability theory and complex analysis to number theory, combinatorics and numerical analysis. His studies of heuristics and of how mathematics is taught are also well known. Besides How to Solve It, he wrote Mathematics and Plausible Reasoning and Mathematical Discovery, and the three books together form a trilogy on teaching mathematics. His honors include the Lester R. Ford Award and the American Mathematical Society's award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics.
