About Guy Debord

Guy Debord (1931 to 1994) was born in Paris and worked as a Marxist theorist, philosopher, writer and filmmaker. He belonged to the Letterist International, founded a Letterist faction, and was a founding member of the Situationist International. He was also briefly part of Socialisme ou Barbarie. Debord tried to explain how economic forces reshaped private and public everyday life in post-war Europe. He argued that alienation is more than a personal feeling and follows from a market-based form of social organization that reached its peak in capitalism. His idea of the spectacle describes the way relationships among people come to be shaped by images. The Society of the Spectacle, published in 1967, is his best-known work.
