About J. Richard Gott
Gott's honors include the Robert J. Trumpler Award, the Astronomical League Award, and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. Princeton also gave him its President's Award for Distinguished Teaching. For many years he led the judging panel of the Westinghouse and Intel Science Talent Search. In 1985 and 1991 he worked out exact solutions to Einstein's equations describing gravity around one cosmic string and then two moving ones. He also proposed that galaxies cluster in a spongelike pattern, a prediction later confirmed by many surveys. Together with Mario Juric, he is credited in Guinness World Records with finding the Sloan Great Wall of Galaxies, the largest known structure in the universe. His book Time Travel in Einstein's Universe was named by Booklist among four Editors' Choice science books of 2001.
