About James Lovelock

James Lovelock was born on 26 July 1919 in Letchworth Garden City in the United Kingdom. He was raised a Quaker but later became non-religious. He could not afford to go to university at first, and he believes this helped keep him from becoming overspecialised. He is best known for the Gaia hypothesis, first formulated in the 1970s. He wrote more than 200 scientific papers, and his books on Gaia include Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth and The Revenge of Gaia.
