About Julian Assange

Julian Assange was born on 3 July 1971 and grew up in several parts of Australia, with his family settling in Melbourne when he was in his mid-teens. He took part in the hacking scene in his youth, and a court convicted him of hacking offences in 1996. WikiLeaks drew international attention in 2010 when it published material supplied by Chelsea Manning, including US military logs from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and diplomatic cables. In 2024 Assange pleaded guilty to an Espionage Act charge in a court on Saipan, then traveled to Australia. The WikiLeaks Files is a collection of essays by scholars, journalists and activists, and Assange contributed its introduction.
