About Marshall McLuhan

Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911 to 1980) was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and raised in Winnipeg. His studies took place at the University of Manitoba and at Cambridge. He began as an English professor at a number of American and Canadian universities, then moved in 1946 to the University of Toronto, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He is often called the father of media studies. In Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man he introduced the phrase "the medium is the message", and he also coined the term global village. He anticipated the web about three decades before it was invented. McLuhan was a prominent voice in media debate in the late 1960s. Academics continued to argue about him after his death, but interest in his ideas returned with the arrival of the Internet.
