About Nathaniel Philbrick

Nathaniel Philbrick was born in Boston in 1956. He studied English at Brown University and American literature at Duke University, and at Brown he became the first Intercollegiate All-American sailor in the university's history in 1978. He later spent four years at Sailing World magazine, then freelanced and wrote or edited several sailing books. After moving to Nantucket in 1986, he grew interested in the island's past and wrote Away Off Shore: Nantucket Island and Its People. His maritime history In the Heart of the Sea took the 2000 National Book Award in the nonfiction category, and a film adaptation followed in 2015. Mayflower was a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in History and won the Massachusetts Book Award for nonfiction.
