About Osho
Osho (1931 to 1990) was born Chandra Mohan Jain in Kuchwada, Madhya Pradesh, India. He studied philosophy at the University of Sagar, and in 1966 he left a lecturing post at the University of Jabalpur to travel across India as a speaker. He rejected institutional religion and argued that spiritual experience cannot be fitted into a single system of dogma. He encouraged people to embrace life fully while staying free of attachment to worldly desires, and he taught meditation, including a form he called dynamic meditation. In 1974 he settled in Pune, where an ashram was established, and in 1981 his movement shifted its focus to a commune in Oregon in the United States. He was deported from the US in 1985, returned to Pune, and died there. The ashram is now the Osho International Meditation Resort. Readers can find his book Meditation in our catalog.
