Peter R. Mitchell is a public defender in New York. With fellow public defender John Schoeffel, he compiled and edited the transcripts that make up Understanding Power. The book collects some of Noam Chomsky's recent talks about political power, looking at its history, its present state and its future. In 2019 Mitchell received a Jonathan E. Gradess Service of Justice Award for sharing his expertise through training presentations and practice resources. At that time he was director of training for the Criminal Division of The Legal Aid Society.
