About Sarah Gilbert

Dame Sarah Gilbert is an English vaccinologist born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. She studied biological sciences at the University of East Anglia, graduating in 1983. She later worked in industry before returning to academia in 1994, when she joined Adrian V. S. Hill's laboratory. Her first research topic was how malaria parasites interact with their hosts. Gilbert teaches and researches at Oxford as a professor of vaccinology, and she co-founded the company Vaccitech. She specializes in vaccines for influenza and emerging viruses, and she led the development and testing of a universal flu vaccine that went into clinical trials in 2011. With her Oxford colleague Catherine Green, Gilbert delivered the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19. The two women tell that story in Vaxxers.
