About Saul Perlmutter

Saul Perlmutter shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for work showing that the universe's expansion is speeding up. He also shared the 2006 Shaw Prize in Astronomy and the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for the same discovery. At the University of California, Berkeley, he holds a physics professorship, and he also works as a senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has led the international Supernova Cosmology Project and was founding director of the Berkeley Institute for Data Science. An interest in critical thinking of the kind scientists use led him to help create the courses "Physics & Music" and "Sense and Sensibility and Science", which he has taught with colleagues. Those courses are the origin of the co-authored book Third Millennium Thinking.
