About Srdja Popovic

Srdja Popovic was born in 1973 and became a leader of Otpor, a Serbian student movement that helped topple president Slobodan Milošević. Otpor was formed in 1998 and used street theater, pranks and simple messages as its form of protest. After a brief spell in Serbian politics, he founded the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS) in 2003. CANVAS promotes nonviolent resistance and has worked with democracy activists in over fifty countries. He laid out his approach in Blueprint for Revolution, published in 2015. Popovic has taught at universities including Harvard Kennedy School and NYU (New York University). He won an election in October 2017 and became Rector of the University of St Andrews.
