About Terrence J. Sejnowski
At the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Terrence J. Sejnowski holds the Francis Crick Chair, and he also has a professorship at the University of California, San Diego. He earned his doctorate in physics at Princeton University, then did postdoctoral work in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and taught biophysics at Johns Hopkins. In the 1980s he pioneered learning algorithms for neural networks, and he also developed Independent Component Analysis, a method for separating mixed signals. He is president of the Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) Foundation and has been elected to all four US national academies. His honors include the 2024 Brain Prize. The Deep Learning Revolution traces the origins of modern artificial intelligence and how it has met discoveries in brain science. With Barbara Oakley, he co-created the online course Learning How To Learn, and the two wrote Uncommon Sense Teaching to help teachers work with the two major learning systems in the brain.
