About Dana Mackenzie

Dana Mackenzie earned a doctorate in mathematics from Princeton, then taught at Duke University for six years and at Kenyon College for seven. Writing had been an early ambition, and a science communication program at the University of California at Santa Cruz opened the way to it. Since 1997, Mackenzie has worked as a full-time freelance writer. Articles have appeared in Discover, Smithsonian, Science and New Scientist. Mackenzie's first book, The Big Splat, or How Our Moon Came to Be, came out in 2003 and was named a Booklist Editor's Choice that year. Mackenzie has also written two booklets in the American Mathematical Society series What's Happening in the Mathematical Sciences. The Book of Why is also part of our catalog. Away from writing, Mackenzie plays chess, won the North Carolina state title in 1985 and 1987, and became a National Master in 1988.
