About John C. Bogle

Bogle founded Vanguard in 1974 and led it as chairman and chief executive until 1996, then stayed on as senior chairman until 2000. He had worked with a predecessor company since 1951, after graduating from Princeton University with a degree in economics. In 1975 he started the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. He urged investors to favour long-term holding over trading and to keep costs, including broker fees, as low as possible. His 1999 book Common Sense on Mutual Funds became a bestseller and is regarded as a classic. The Little Book of Common Sense Investing is another of his books. Bogle died in 2019.
