About Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking (1942 to 2018) was born in Oxford and studied physics at University College, Oxford. He then completed a PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics at Cambridge. He was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics there from 1979 to 2009, and was also director of research at its Centre for Theoretical Cosmology. He worked with Roger Penrose on singularity theorems in general relativity. He also predicted that black holes emit radiation, an idea now called Hawking radiation. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21 and lived with it for more than 50 years. His book A Brief History of Time spent a record 237 weeks on the Sunday Times bestseller list. His books also include Brief Answers to the Big Questions and The Grand Design. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
