About Bruce D. Perry
Bruce D. Perry is a senior fellow at the ChildTrauma Academy, a nonprofit based in Houston, Texas. He has also held an adjunct professorship in psychiatry and behavioral sciences in Chicago. He was born in Bismarck, North Dakota, and took both his M.D. and Ph.D. at Northwestern University. His psychiatry residency was at Yale, followed by a fellowship at the University of Chicago focused on psychiatry for children and teenagers. His research has examined how childhood neglect and traumatic stress alter the brain's biology, and so affect a child's health. This work led to the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, an approach to helping maltreated and traumatized children. Agencies have consulted him after events such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine school shootings and the September 11th attacks. He has written over 300 journal articles, book chapters and scientific proceedings. The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, written with Maia Szalavitz, draws on his work with maltreated children.
