About L. David Marquet
Marquet graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1981 and spent 28 years in the submarine force. He was given command of the nuclear submarine USS Santa Fe when it ranked last in retention and operational standing. Instead of giving orders, he gave control to the crew and treated them as leaders. The Santa Fe went on to reach the highest retention and operational standings in the Navy. After he left, the ship kept winning awards, and ten later submarine captains were among those promoted from it. Marquet retired from the Navy in 2009 and has worked as a leadership expert and speaker, sharing an approach he calls Intent-Based Leadership. He has also taught at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. His books in our catalog include Turn the Ship Around and Leadership Is Language.
