About Richard C. Schwartz

Schwartz started out as a family therapist and academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He found that family therapy alone did not fully relieve symptoms, and his clients told him about inner "parts" that related to one another much like members of a family. From this he developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in the early 1980s. He founded the IFS Institute, which offers training and certification for mental health professionals and others around the world. He has also worked as a teaching associate in psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, which is linked to Harvard Medical School for teaching. Schwartz has written many books on IFS, including No Bad Parts and You Are the One You've Been Waiting For.
