BookBits turns nonfiction books into audio summaries of about 15 minutes, in English and Thai. They are summaries of nonfiction books, not recordings of the complete original books: the main ideas, in our own words, for the times when you want what a book says without the hours it takes to read it. On the website, book pages also give you part of each summary as text, free.
This page explains what you get: what a summary sounds like, what you can read and hear before paying, what is in the catalog, and what the subscription includes.
What a book summary app does
A book summary app gives you the main ideas of a book in minutes. An audiobook is the whole book read aloud, which often takes many hours. Both have their place: the full book brings the stories, examples and nuance, while a summary helps you understand a book quickly, decide whether to read all of it, or revisit one you already know.
BookBits is the first kind, and it is built for listening. If you want to know how listening compares with reading, see Audiobooks vs Reading. If you are weighing BookBits against other apps, Best Book Summary Apps Compared puts prices, trials and languages side by side.
What a BookBits summary sounds like
Each summary takes about 15 minutes, and every book page shows the exact length. A few examples from the catalog:
- Deep Work by Cal Newport: 16 min 1 sec
- The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel: 16 min 31 sec
- Meditations by Marcus Aurelius: 12 min 20 sec
Each summary is built the same way: an introduction, several key chapters and a conclusion. The book page lists each part with its own length, so you can see in advance how the summary is put together.
We write each summary in our own words through an AI-augmented process, and AI voices narrate them.
Audio and text: what you can try free on the website
You do not need an account to explore. Take the page for Drive by Daniel H. Pink, whose full summary runs 20 min 48 sec. It shows:
- a one-paragraph description of the book and the total summary length;
- a short audio preview, about a minute long;
- the table of contents, with every chapter title and its length;
- the full introduction and the full conclusion, written out as text;
- a one-line guide to each of the middle chapters;
- a longer “What is this book about?” overview and a note on the author.
Here is how the Drive summary is laid out on its page:
| Part | Length | What the page shows |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Introduction | 2 min 26 sec | Full text |
| 2. The Evolution of Human Motivation | 3 min 08 sec | One-line guide |
| 3. The Hidden Costs of External Incentives | 3 min 02 sec | One-line guide |
| 4. Autonomy: The Power of Self-Direction | 2 min 40 sec | One-line guide |
| 5. Mastery: The Pursuit of Excellence | 2 min 41 sec | One-line guide |
| 6. Purpose: The Why Behind the Work | 2 min 38 sec | One-line guide |
| 7. Implementing Motivation 3.0 in Daily Life | 2 min 39 sec | One-line guide |
| 8. Conclusion | 1 min 34 sec | Full text |
That is the text side of BookBits: on each book page you can read how the summary opens and how it ends, and see what every chapter in between covers. The middle chapters are not written out on the page, and members hear the full summary in the app. You can also hear three previews on our Pricing page, from Atlas of the Heart, Deliberate Calm and Zero to One, in the preview section.
What’s in the catalog
BookBits covers nonfiction only, with 5,000+ titles. These were the largest categories when we wrote this page:
| Category | Books |
|---|---|
| Personal Development | 1,711 |
| Psychology | 1,307 |
| Management & Leadership | 911 |
| History | 743 |
| Politics & Current Affairs | 717 |
| Career & Success | 662 |
| Science | 631 |
A book can sit in more than one category, so the numbers overlap. You can browse every category on Discover, or look up a writer in the authors index.
Start from a goal or a reading path
You might not have a book in mind yet, only a problem: a new job, a tough conversation, a habit you want to change. BookBits is organized for that. The site’s Goals menu has 54 goals in eight groups (Lead, Build, Think, Earn, Heal, Connect, Thrive and Grow), and each goal gathers the books that help with it. Try Learn Faster or Advance Career.
Reading paths go one step further and put a set of books in a deliberate order. The Strategic Knowledge Worker and The Fast Learner’s Foundation are two to start with. If you prefer a list, our reading lists include Best Productivity Books and Best Books for Entrepreneurs.
Getting the most from a 15-minute summary
A few habits make short summaries more useful:
- Use a moment you already have. A commute, a lunch break or the gap between two meetings is enough for one summary. You do not need a new routine.
- Let the summary help you choose. If a book’s ideas grab you, it has earned the hours of the full book. If they do not, you know that before you buy it.
- Follow a path instead of jumping around. A reading path lines up books on one theme in a set order, so you always know what to hear next.
- Go back to the book page afterward. The written introduction and conclusion are a quick way to look over what you just heard.
Our guide How to Remember What You Read collects memory techniques you can pair with any summary.

Quick answers
Where can I find 15-minute audio book summaries?
On BookBits. Summaries take about 15 minutes, each book page shows the exact length, and you can play a free preview before you subscribe.
Can I read BookBits summaries as text?
On the website, in part: book pages show the introduction and conclusion of each summary as text, plus a one-line guide to every chapter. Members hear the full summary in the app.
Is there a free book summary app?
Several apps have a free option, usually a daily title, short samples or a trial. Our guide to free book summaries compares them. On BookBits, previews and the written parts of each book page are free.
Does a summary replace the book?
No. A summary covers the main ideas, not the stories, examples and nuance that make the full book worth reading. It is a good way to understand a book quickly or decide which books deserve your full time. Audiobooks vs Reading looks at how the formats compare.
Can I listen in Thai?
Yes. BookBits summaries are in English and Thai.
